A few things that make me smile

The thing about living in the age of Facebook, blogs and other social media sites is that they can portray life on a slant - often one that looks like a continuous happy-fest.  I tend to avoid visits to FaceBook when life gets a little crummy as I don't like the feeling that perhaps other folks are having a way easier time of it than I am!  Typically, we only take (or post) photos that are pleasant.  So my disclaimer on this post, is that overall, life is good.  This week my gallbladder turned the life-dial down, however, from "pretty good" to "okay" to "cope."   It's been a week of discomfort/pain that's robbed me of much sleep, yet despite that, there were a few pretty good moments mixed in there.

One 'happy thing' was getting A ready to catch the bus when she said,

"There's a teacher who wants me in her class next year, you know."
Oh, how you do know that?
"Because when she sees me on the playground, she asks me my name.  She teaches grade 2 and says she wants to teach me next year."

It's nice to know your child has been noticed by teachers at school for positive things.  As a teacher, I'd want a kid like A in my class, too.  She's been described as a nice glue that holds the class together, showing kindness to all her classmates.  That warms my heart.  I also love that she has her own sense of flare.  She's always into finding new ways to doll herself up.  This week was about scarfs around her neck, which gains much admiration from a Mom who is into plain jane wear.  :)

Another thing that tickled me was Iz figuring out that banisters are made for sliding down.  No one else has modelled this for her or told her to try it.  It's just in her nature to climb and be daring and there's something lovely about seeing a child do (safely) what comes innately.

We had a week of pretty great weather:  sunny, if not super hot (and no real bugs).   So we enjoyed a few picnics in parks.  My apologies for yet more park pictures!

And when the weather suddenly turned not so good on Friday night, it ended up being a really fun event. We could smell a storm coming and tried to clear things off the deck.  Within minutes, there were rivers of hail going down the street - no exaggeration.  This photo was taken about a minute into in and can't do justice to the force of the wind or the noise of the hail and torrents of rain.
It was so incredibly loud that we didn't notice terrorized child #3 until she was in the kitchen screaming (strangely with her jammy top off!).  We tried to calm her down by having her suck on a hail ball, which sort of worked.  The news reported that "quarter-sized" hail was seen throughout the city, which certainly was the case.  We felt so badly for the people we saw running on the sidewalks.  It seriously must have hurt.

As for Ai and A, they were watching the storm out their respective windows, fascinated.  But five minutes later, Iz still wasn't convinced that this storm-thing was okay.
After the hail started to subside, she wasn't so scared of the thunder and lightening and managed to peek out for a while.

It made for an exciting and memorable night.  We all enjoyed cuddling in my bed reading picture books about wind, storms and being afraid.  Only downfall was that the kids didn't get to sleep till 10:00, so Saturday was a rainy inside day with lots of tears and emotion. . .

The other mentionables of the week are that all of the blinds, curtain rods and curtains are finally hung in the bedrooms - mostly thanks to S!   In order to hem some of the curtains,  I used (quite poorly) a sewing machine for the first time since I've become a mom.  Yikes.  It certainly feels good to have the rooms coming together.  The outside of the house is also pretty much together, as the workers finished getting the siding up on the house and have completed the fence.   There's a few finishing touches that need to happen, but it looks so much better!

Though indicative of their relationship (that Iz is great and rather enjoys the stimulation that comes from pushing Ai's buttons, their dynamic provided a smile this morning.  Ai, who likes his space and quiet, was frustrated with Iz and her constant chattering.  He told her to "Stop it!" and then complained to S, "Iz's making me dumb!"  And of course because we laughed, it's a phrase we've heard repeated a number of times by them all today.  Perhaps it's a line that will join the 'inside joke' collection that's accumulating between them.  It's super to have siblings, even though they can be so annoying!
