On Friday and Saturday this past week, "Freedom Train" - a group of First Nations people traveling from Jasper to Toronto to protest against the Northern Gateway Pipelines - was stopping in Winnipeg. The kids and I joined S and two of his co-workers outside the Legislature Building for a couple of hours Friday afternoon. It was not well-attended, which was unfortunate.
The kids were good sports about attending, Ai taking a liking to this sign which I'd made with him in mind. He and Iz are into making word rhymes by adding the sound 'schm' to things, inspired by a Sesame Street episode of "Elmo Schmelmo." Funny what sticks with kids.
Iz mostly enjoyed exploring the grounds and climbing up on the massive bricks.
The proposed dual pipelines would cross 1177 kms of beautiful forests and rivers, much of it traditional Indigenous lands, to take tar sand oil to the BC coast. The environmental costs are sobering. I just wish we could consider how to reduce oil consumption instead of spending and risking so much for a few to benefit from oil demands around the world. Please consider signing a petition (here) to speak against the pipeline.
The few other photos from the week included the kids' backyard "museum." They were excited to have us pretend to be visitors and explained the different things in their "collections."
One of A's favourite after school things to do is to change in to Iz's clothes - funny. This week, Ai was into just wearing his train hat. Interesting creatures, kids are.
We also had a new 'tot lot' playground open up this week, only a few blocks away. The kids have enjoyed after-dinner treks over there, getting to meet some new kids in the neighbourhood.

S preached an hour away in a Steinbach church yesterday morning, so the kids and I went along for that and enjoyed getting to see a new community. We were hosted for a potluck afterward at what I think must be the nicest bachelor's house in Southern Manitoba. He made 3 soups, salad, pies and bread to host at least 25 of us over, clearing out his living room to fit the required tables. It was a really enjoyable afternoon - just made for a busy weekend all-around in our household. Good thing it's raining to make sure we have a home day!
