I smell a rat

Actually, I didn't.

But tonight I put A and Ai to bed, came downstairs and decided to watch an Amazing Race episode on YouTube before washing dishes.  I kept seeing movement over in the corner by the bookshelf, then somewhere in the table area but thought it must just be my glasses catching the light.  Soon enough, however, I saw a cute brown mouse round the corner into the kitchen.  Oh man.

This is something I haven't had to deal with since China days - thankfully only once in my own apartment, the first night I had to sleep there.  The previous night Tonya and I had arrived at our university campus and crashed in her little bachelor apartment.  It was so infested with cockroaches that I had hardly slept (Tonya, however, is a champion roach killer and could do it single-handedly with just a kleenex!  She's still my hero for this!).  Next night, I moved up to my apartment and fell into a dead sleep.  What a blessing.  With feet up at the headboard (the favourite hide-out for cockroaches, I'd learned), my head at the bottom of the bed - I rolled over the next morning to look at the sun streaming through my window.  I remember feeling so peaceful and rested.  Was suddenly jolted from such bliss when I noticed mouse droppings on my pillow!  Turns out they were all under my duvet beside my body, too.  Ug.

Fortunately, my musophobic tendencies aren't quite as strong as my arachnophobic ones.  But admittedly, I am rather creeped out to go in my kitchen.  And the already creepy basement storing all of our belongings won't find me digging around any more than I need to before we move!  I'll have to get traps, I guess.  The bonus in China was that the ladies who looked after the building would come at our beck and call to chase a mouse out.  And I think there were only a couple - mostly in Tonya's apartment closer down to ground level.  We felt badly to see them get squashed by brooms, but at least we didn't have to do the deed.

Well, S and Iz flew out to Vancouver yesterday afternoon.  S will be attending meetings all week and then off to Black Creek for the weekend.  Iz will enjoy being spoiled by various family members - what a great opportunity for her.  She was very excited, proud to have a backpack of her own.   And Ai has been very good to not be jealous (yet).  Helps to have had A home from school for the weekend as they play so very well together.  Nice not to have a threesome at times.

I've been looking forward to some much needed rest with Iz gone.  She still has me up at least once each night, then crawling into my bed between 5 and 6 most mornings.  So it's too bad I get have a break from my cute little rug rat only to realize I have another!   I'll just have to convince myself that it'll stay downstairs for the night - and most likely it will.  We seriously have enough food in cracks to keep it happy for a good while.  And with snow falling outside, I don't blame it for making its way in . . .

This made me laugh as I am going through a mice invasion right now in my house. I've caught four and still have one really smart mouse that eats the cheese and peanut butter out of the traps but won't get caught. I even had one wake me up at night as it ran down my bare arm. I was traumatized for days! It's an old house and the basement is full of mice so it's hard to keep them out of my unit. I'm paranoid now and inspect every piece of dirt to make sure it's not mouse dirt. Ugggh! Good luck :) Patti

Oh Patti - that's awful!! Poor you! Nasty to have caught 4 - hopefully the traps killed them straight out for you?! Good thing you're moving fairly soon, as well!

Ai and I went out and bought some mouse traps this morning. I demonstrated to him how the trap works and explained not to touch it, how much it'd hurt him, etc. An hour later, I turned to see him holding the trap and snacking the cheese out of it! When I reacted, he threw it on the floor and then it sprang. Man! Glad Iz isn't here, too, as she can't keep her hands off things, either. Think I'll have to try the peanut butter instead as he's not such a fan of it! If you have any tricks with your sneaky mouse, let me know - and good luck, too! :)
