I've never attended a Baby & Kids Show before and its not something I'd normally do. Lots of booths of products for new moms (mostly) to look at - basically a way for businesses to get contact information and market to parents. But I had seen the advertisement and saw that the Backyardigans were performing live - a show my kids have seen before at Omi's house (so they told me). Admission was only $10 for an adult, free for kids (and I managed to get free parking!) so I decided . . . why not? With S away and having our little friend Molly with us from 7:00-5:30, I thought it'd be a good way to break up a potentially long day. It gave me a chance to see the Convention Centre, the girls had fun getting face painting done, receiving balloons and free candy, playing in bouncy castles and such. And yes, the Backyardigans were a hit.
Considering the ratio of 1:4 and how busy the venue was, it all worked fairly well. The downfall was exiting . . . I hadn't foreseen the challenge of getting three not-so-practiced three year olds down a very long escalator to the door (me with my arms full of balloons and odd bags). Meant I had Iz ahead on the escalator, crying mid-way down, Molly crying at the top too scared to get on, Ai crying because he wanted on but didn't know how! Not a fun scene, me scrabbling down the stairs with children crying on the three levels of the large entrance hallway. Rather like a live practice of the "How can the farmer cross the river" riddle - trying to get a wolf, chicken and a cabbage safely across when he can only take two in the boat at a time. Overall, a great morning out. The advantage of the big excursion was that all three younger kids napped, so I could have a bit of an afternoon break. After nap we ventured out into the cold to a nearby playground.
I was thankful how quickly the day went by with such little fuss. It's often the case that having one more actually can lighten the load as it breaks up our regular sibling dynamics. There were a few tears, but they were pretty cute ones - I couldn't resist taking my crying tiger's picture. Was a problem of having 4 kids and only 2 baby doll strollers, though A was kind and consented to having "babysitters" for her baby.
ps - If it seems that I'm biased and have more photos of Iz than the others, its because she's typically the only one who'll cooperate. A and Ai are too busy playing so won't look at the camera!
ps - On the note of being a feline creature today with face paints, earlier this week the dinner-time discussion was about what they wanted to do when the kids grow up.
A: "I want to be a teacher."
Ai: "I want to be a Dad."
Iz: "I want to be a kitty and go meow-meow all day."
Ai: "You can't be a kitty. You just can't."
It's hard to be the youngest child sometimes - always older kids around to correct you!

Cuties! Miss those little faces around here! O would have just been in seventh heaven to have seen the Backyardigans in person! I think we've seen each of the episodes about two hundred times.
Yikes - how many episodes are there?! :) It is a pretty catchy theme song . . . We don't have cable, so haven't seen them often as the library doesn't seem to have any Backyardigan DVDs around.
